BMW e28 Euro Bumper Conversion Part 1

This is the somewhat tricky part. The US valance needs to be cut to fit the Euro turn and fog lights. Luckily you can see the outline for where they’ll go BUT if you cut it out on the outline there will be no way to mount the lights. Therefore, leave some excess material approximately in the areas where the lights would bolt up. Be generous, you can always trim excess metal but not add it back.

A cutting wheel was my tool of choice for this job and made easy work of the thin metal.

First piece cut and removed.

This is the result of the rough cut. I thought I left enough excess metal for mounting purposes but this being my first time doing this I had to learn the hard way.

I bent the metal back and fit the light. You’ll notice I missed the mark! The screws that hold the center of the turn signal are too far to the left. If you make the same mistake fear not. The workaround is to bend the metal up a bit and in a manner that it wedges the light in place. The setup has actually proven to work very well.

To get a more precise cut for the brackets I used a reciprocating air saw.

Thankfully I was a little better at measuring on the side of the light and here you can see how it mounts.

Here’s what the lights look like in place. Is fitment perfect, no? But unless you’re close up then no one will notice when it’s on the car.

Only one of the two mounting points will work for the fog light. You can always drill another hole into the plastic and add a second screw but I’ve had no issues with the fog light being secured with one screw.

Here’s the plastic foglight trim that I bought from Bav Auto. You’ll want to buy this piece as it covers up the support bar and adds that finishing touch to the light setup.

For the other side I made sure to not make the same mistake twice and left more metal during the rough cut stage.

Test fit the lights, make any cuts or adjustment so it all fits without issue and that’s it for the valance. It’s now Euro-spec’d.
