When it comes to rebuilding transmissions, especially the Porsche kind which cost big dollars not only to replace but the parts themselves can add up very quickly, my suggestion is to find a qualified transmission rebuilder and have him handle the duty.
However, there are the few of you that may be bold enough to try this on your own and after witnessing a full teardown and rebuild I don’t think it’s rocket science nor is it that difficult. A Porsche service manual is most definitely needed and maybe a few special tools to make the job easier but as you’ll see we managed without them.
Without further ado, the two videos below will take you through the step-by-step process of how we disassembled my 1987 Porsche 911 Turbo 4-speed transmission and replaced worn out synchros and rings. I hope that it motivates you to take the plunge at attempting this job because I really don’t think it’s that difficult and having the visuals to show and explain the process should help out quite a bit.
