Nissan SR20DET Swap Guide Part 1

Turbo Exhaust Outlet

Another upgrade to do while the engine is out is the 02 housing turbo outlet. The stock piece is restrictive in nature while GT SPEC’s 3-inch outlet enhances exhaust flow at one of the more critical areas, right after the turbo.

Remove the heat shielding around the turbo and outlet. Be careful, some bolts may be seized and will require time and care to remove them.

There are five bolts that hold the outlet onto the turbo exhaust housing. Most are easily accessible but you’ll have to use a wrench to get at the one nut that is tucked close to the housing.

This is a good chance to inspect the turbo’s exhaust turbine. Look for cracks and damage and shaft play. Some play is normal but if it’s hitting the housing wall then you’ve got a problem.

If you’re smart you’ll have ordered new exhaust studs. If not, use two nuts and tighten them together on the exhaust stud then use a wrench on the inside nut and the stud should come out.

Or not… Sometimes it’s just too rusted. Even with the help of some heat the stud didn’t budge. The solution, use bolts to hold the downpipe up and forget the studs altogether.

Reinstall the pipe just like the stock one and put the o2 sensor back in place and you’re ready to go! Remember to use the factory heat shielding, it significantly helps heat management in the turbo area.

I’m planning on doing this exact swap to my 95 S14 Zenki. My car is completely stock and one question I have been wondering is.. Do I need to modify/replace my front bumper for the turbo intercooler to fit?

You shouldn’t unless you’re doing a fmic conversion. The S chassis cars all had side mount intercoolers, and it should bolt up with little to no modification (They came like this everywhere but north America). If you’re gonna do a front mount, then ya, you might need to, but that’s pretty routine
