Accusump Install

I found this nifty firewall grommet that I cut an X into then riveted in place, allowing me to pass the -10AN fitting and hose from the Accusump through the firewall cleanly.

After the plumbing has been secured and fastened, the system needs to be wired which is pretty straightforward and outlined clearly in the wiring diagram. Some installations have the Accusump wired to turn on when the ignition is powered up and some are wired through a toggle switch.

I wired mine to a toggle switch so I have the option of closing the valve without shutting the engine off. The toggle switch also makes charging and discharging the system much easier at start up and shut down.

The system is now ready for a pressure check. Turn the Accusump on and pressurize the system to 60psi as instructed. All my connections where leak free so I let the car sit overnight to see if the system would hold the 60psi pre-charge and happily found the needle still pointed at 60 psi in the morning. The pre-charge was then bled down to 10psi as per instructions by pulling on the Schrader valve until 10psi was indicated on the dial.

With that all taken care of it was time to start the car. Fingers crossed and face shield in place, I turned the key. The car started and the pressure dial jumped up to 60psi at idle. I double checked all the connections for leaks again, just to be sure. With zero leaks, I jumped in the cabin and gave the engine a few revs and switched off the Accusump once I had it charged to 115psi. The reasoning for this is to now have immediate oil pressure at cranking, no more dry starts from here on out! The last item left to do is add oil back into the system so it’s topped up and accounts for the extra volume in the Accusump.

I’m extremely pleased with the Accusump system as it’s a relatively inexpensive safeguard for a very expensive rotary engine. Sure, there’s a bit of extra weight added but the protection and piece of mind it provides is well worth the tradeoff. There’s no more worry of oil starvation meaning I can concentrate on the task at hand -Going fast and keeping the car off the walls!

Great article Ken! Makes me want to do this on Project Grip S14!
